Inspiration

These cards are visually inspired by horror movies and tropes associated with those movies. Specifically, slasher movies.

Back of Cards

Cards were inspired by the sketches you’d see in the journal of a slasher movie’s villain. Added a few other elements to make them feel more horror-esque like the stitches on the clubs/spades/diamonds/hearts and the blood drops coming from the symbols in the corners.

The Face Cards are inspired by character tropes commonly found in horror movies. The Jack card is the jester-themed slasher of the deck. The King card is the jock, who is often considered to be the "king” of whatever high school the teen characters go to. The joker is the “final girl,” a common trope in teen slasher movies. It’s basically just the last one standing that takes down the threat of the movie (think Ripley from Alien, Laurie from Halloween, etc). This is because the Joker card trumps all other cards in the deck, just like how the final girl manages to come out on top by the end of the movie.

Just like with the suit cards, the back of the cards have a sketchy look to them.

Slashers often use their killers as the face of their franchise, so you see them all over the marketing and merchandise. That’s why you can see the jester’s face here on the back of the cards since without the slasher there would be no slasher movie.
